In order to start note taking, you need to know WHY YOU ARE READING! There are many purposes for reading including researching and reading for fun. There is an easy way to find out your purpose if you have a school assignment-- look at the assignment sheet or read the directions.
Typical note taking assignments ask you to do one or more of the following while reading...
-Write down the main ideas and supporting details |
-Analyze the author's view point |
-Compare one thing to another |
-Explain what caused an event and what the effects were |
-Explain the steps involved in some process |
-Explain/Chronicle the order of some events |
-List details of some thing being described |
-Explain a concept and list examples |
If you have the assignment in front of you, determine what you are supposed to do now. Sometimes writing this purpose as a statement on the top of your note sheet is helpful.
