STEP TWO:  Scan the Text


After determining why you are reading, you need to look at the text.  Before you start reading the whole thing, look it over for clues that might help you figure out what information is covered and how the author might give you that information.

Things to look for include...

-A Title

-Subtitles

-Headings and Subheadings

-Defined Words

-Table of Contents

-Author's Notes, Footnotes or Endnotes

-Relevant charts, timelines, graphs, or pictures

-Introductions, Prefaces, or Appendices

Figuring out this information is important because scanning allows you to get some idea of what's ahead.  That is important, because now you show READ the source (or at least a good part of it).
